| This is the highest lighthouse in the United States and its powerful beacon can be seen for a distance of 17 to 22 miles. During early navigation on the Great Lakes, the magnetic pull in this area was so great that it disrupted the true compass reading causing many shipwrecks on the reefs. The lighthouse was installed to prevent these accidents, and is now a Minnesota State Park. |
