Additional Details:
The Ohio-Erie Canal was begun on July 4, 1825. When completed, it stretched 309 miles from Cleveland on Lake Erie to Portsmouth on the Ohio River. To traverse the summit near Akron, a height of 390 feet above Lake Erie, 152 locks were required. Lock 4 at Canal Fulton is the 4th lock south of the summit. St. Helena II is authentically designed to represent a typical freight barge. She is 60 feet on the keel and 13 feet wide, weighing 22 tons and drawing 18" of water. St. Helena II carries 60 passengers from Canal Fulton to Lock 4 and return, a total trip if two miles.
