Additional Details:
This long stretch of the Valley Pike is between Mt. Jackson and New Market, with Shenandoah Caverns to the right. This famous highway was constructed 1835-1840 by Colonel Crozet, a French military engineer who saw service under Napoleon. for the most part the road follows the old Indian war path which extended from New York to South Carolina. Thousands of Valley pioneers came from Pennsylvania over the old "Indian Road" and carried supplies with packhorse and schooner wagon. Rude's Hill was one of Stonewall Jackson's strategic Valley camp sites.
