Latest addition to the fleet of Pere Marquette Railway carferries offering motorists and shippers a direct short route between Ludington, Mich. and Milwaukee, Manitowoc and Kewaunee, Wisconsin, the City of Midland is the largest and most powerful ship of its type on the Great Lakes. Launched Sept. 18, 1940 and entering service early in 1941, the new carferry has ample accommodations for passengers in its spacious modern lounges, dining room, 74 staterooms, broad decks. It handles 50 automobiles and 34 railroad cars. Displacement 8200 tons; length 406 feet; depth 17 1/2 feet; width 57 feet; speed 18 miles per hour.
