Additional Details:
San Miguel, the oldest church in the United States, is still used for religious exercises. It was built about 1610 for the use of the Tlaxcala Indians, servants of the Spaniards who founded Sante Fe. The earliest documentary evidence so far discovered is 1628. During the Pueblo Uprising in 1680 the roof and the early records were burned. The walls were left intact. When the Spaniards returned with Don Diego de Vargas in 1693, temporary repairs were made. The marquis of Penuela completed repairs in 1710.
