Bunker Hill Monument, situated on what was called Breed's Hill, now known as Bunker Hill in Charlestown, a part of Boston. Built of Quincy Granite, 221 feet high, 30 feet square at base, 15 feet square at apex. Spiral flight of 295 steps inside. Corner stone laid June 17. 1825 the fiftieth anniversary of battle of Bunker Hill, by Lafayette while on visit to United States. Oration by Daniel Webster. Completed July 3, 1842. Cost $150,000, which was voluntarily contributed. Dedicated, June 17, 1843, in the presence of President Tyler and Cabinet. |
