From the first barrel of sugar donated to a Mrs. Spencer, in 1806, sprang what came to be the well known “Salem Gibralter” business. This was the first candy made commercially in Salem. Salem's sea captains made many voyages with Salem Gibralters - their popularity grew from Salem to the Far East, China, the East Indies and Africa. Their purity proved, as they kept fresh in all climates. They are in full flavor when they are purchased from the manufacturer. Their flavor and taste is unique and distinct from all other kinds of confections. Of the Gibralter it is said: It gazes upon Chocolate and Sherbet and says: “Before you were, I was; after you are not, I shall be.” . Eleanor Putnam. Pub. by Yankee Colour Corp., Southboro, Mass.
