Whether fiction or fact, the accepted story is that the mountain (which you see from your doorstep) is named for Kari, the daughter of an Indian Chief, and her lover Tocom. In memory of their love, Wautonomah, her father, named the mountain Tocom-Kari. Later it was changed to Tucumcari - for the town of the present day.
