One of the best preserved early mining towns-Gold was discovered March 1850 and started the town on the way to fame as the "Second City of California". Within six weeks after this discovery, the population had increased to 6,000 while later on it was estimated from 25,000 to 40,000. Columbia was called "The Gem of the Southern Mines." Columbia State Park, Tuolumne County.
