Mrs. Anna M. Reeves Jarvis. The First Honored Mother. On May 10, 1908, a Mother's Day service was held in this Church, at the request of the founder, Miss Anna Jarvis. Mr. L.L. Loar, the Sunday School Superintendent, arranged the program, and it was celebrated in memory of Mrs. Anna Reeves Jarvis, the honored mother, who served as a teacher in the Primary department for over twenty years. On this same date, in the Church service which followed, the pastor, Rev. Mr. Harry c. Howard, D.D., preached the Mother's Day sermon. It was at the General Conference, which convened at Minneapolis, Minnesota, in July, 1912, that Judge Robinson, a delegate from this church, introduced a resolution recognizing Miss Anna Jarvis as the founder of Mother's Day, and the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in the Church. Later in 1914 Congress authorized the President to designate the second Sunday of each May as Mother's Day, and since then it has spread to all corners of the earth.
