The First Baptist Church, Augusta, Georgia,
organized March 25, 1817 by 8 men and 10
women. The name of the first organization was
"The Baptist Praying Society of Augusta.” On
May 8, 1845, 327 messengers from the District
of Columbia, Virginia, North Carolina, South
Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, Mississip-
pi and Georgia organized the Southern Baptist
Convention in the First Baptist Church
Augusta.
