"Monticello" - Home of Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, was born in Shadwell, Albemarie County, Virginia April 2nd, 1743. He entered the College William and Mary at the age of 17, was graduated, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1767. On Jan 1st, 1772, he married Mrs. Martha Skelton, a widow of much grace and charm, and took her to his new home, "Monticello." His estate included 40,000 acres and 135 slaves. After 44 years of public service, Jefferson retired to private life in 1809, and died at "Monticello" on July 4th, 1826. His wife died in 1782.
