John Tyler became the tenth President of the United States on April 6th, 1841, two days after the death of his predecessor, William Henry Harrison. He was born in Greenway, Charles City Co., Va. March with 1790, and was graduated from William and Mary College in 1807. In 1811 he was married to Letitia Christian. Mrs. Tyler died at the White House in September 1842. In June, 1944, Tyler married Julia Gardner. At the expiration of his term of office, he retired to Sherwood Forest, where he indulged in his scholarly tastes and dispensed agreeable hospitality. He died at his home on Jan. 17th, 1862, his wife surviving him 37 years.
