The Duke University Marine Laboratory is located
approximately 160 miles east of the Durham
campus of Duke University on the North Carolina
coast in the historic fishing community of Beaufort.
The multi-million dollar facility supports teaching
and research activities of six Duke Arts and Science
departments and two departments from the
Medical School. It is the home port of the R/V
CAPE HATTERAS, the research vessel (shown in
left center) of the Duke/University of North
Carolina Oceanography Consortium. The Duke
University Marine Biomedical Center is also located
within the Marine Lab complex.
Academic programs include both a Fall and Spring
Term for undergraduates, three Summer Terms for
both graduate and undergraduates, as well as year
around research for graduate students. All academic
programs are open to Duke and non-Duke students.
Research activities involve nearly 50 projects
funded by over ten federal, state, and private
agencies. In addition, corporate and industry
interest in ongoing research accounts for involve-
ment in more than a dozen other projects.
