No. 158. SCENE IN RALEIGH TAVERN. This
famous hostelry stood on Gloucester Street, Williams-
burg, Virginia. It was built about 1700, of wood, with
entrances on both fronts, and a leaden bust of Sir
Walter Raleigh over the main doorway. The "“ Apollo
Room" was the place of meeting when the General
Assembly had been dissolved by the royal governors, and
measures which have gone far towards protecting the
liberties of America had their origin in the brains of the
greatest men of the Revolutionary epoch, assembled in
this historic room. It was also a favorite place for balls
and witnessed many scenes of brilliant festivities and
gaiety. Thomas Jefferson, writing from college, speaks
with rapture of "dancing with Belinda in the Apollo."
