POCAHONTAS AT THE COURT OF
KING JAMES. The arrival of Pocahontas, accom-
panied by her husband, caused a great sensation in Lon-
don, and she was received with much distinction. She
was treated as a daughter of a king, and the old his-
torians say that it was a constant tradition of that time
that the King of England was highly offended at John
Rolfe for marrying a royal princess. She was presented
at court by Lady Delaware, and was “graciously used
and made much of by the king and queen. The Bishop
of London, who was delighted at her conversion to
Christianity, gave a grand entertainment in her honor,
one of great pomp, ceremony and splendor. She was
the new world personified in the gracious form of a little
beauty of twenty-one, and the curious eyes of the fine
gentlemen and ladies of London, noticing that there was
no trace of awkwardness or embarrassment in her de.
meanor, overwhelmed her with attention, and she sud-
denly became the fashion. The fine life of London, with
its rich costumes, gilded coaches and high revelry was a
curious contrast to the first years of Pocahontas in the
forests of Virginia, but it did not affect in any way the
simplicity of character of this remarkable young woman.
