From this ancient cradle of civilization - where a new and glorious page of history is being written - I send you hearty greetings and best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. --------------------------------- The medallion between the American and Russian soldiers is the official insignia of the Persian Gulf Service Command, the U.S. Army supply line to Russia. It consists of a seven-pointed white star and a red sword on a green background. The star is from the flag of Iraq (Mesopotamia); the sword from the government flag of Iran (Persia). Red stands for sacrifice, white for purity, and green for agriculture. The last color also signifies Islam, the state religion of these countries. All three colors are common to the flags of both countries.
