Description:

Fred Harvey Trade Mark The meaning of the word "Powamu" is "to put in order". It is the duty of this secret order of the Hopi Indians to consecrate the fields and seeds to be used in the approaching planting season. This is done in a complicated ceremony lasting nine days and held in February of each year. In July there is another nine days ceremony to celebrate the going home of the last Katcinas. Both of these ceremonies require the use of an altar similar to the one erected in the Indian Building at Albuquerque.
