Surrounded by water, this picturesque island offers unsurpassed boating, bathing and fishing. From June to September there is a daily ferry service from New Bedford. This is a view of Wash Pond Bend, once fresh water, used to dip and wash Sheep. On the island inside the pond is the Bartholomew Gosnold Monument, in honor of the leader of the first settlement in 1602, 18 years before Plymouth was settled.
