This great memorial to George Washington, the Mason, is situated on a hill west of Alexandria between the City of Washington and Mount Vernon. The unusual architectural features and the remarkably landscaped terraced approaches present a sticking apearance. It was modelled after the ancient towers which were used as beacons to guide mariners into harbor as exemplified in he beacon at Rhodes.
