EAST AFRICAN PLAINS GROUP Among the antelopes in the herds of game still roaming the East African plains are kongoni hartebeest (Alcelaphus cokii kongoni) and Thomson gazelles (Gazella thomsonii). The hartebeest, with its high forehead and bracket-shaped horns is characteristic of this region. Thomson gazelles, called "tommies" by hunters, are common in East Africa. They are one of the tamest of the gazelles. In the back- ground behind the "tommies" are Roberts gazelles (Gazella granti robertsi), larger than the others.
