THE GREAT
METEOR CRATER
Studied by astronauts and future space
travellers, by earth scientists and space
scientists, and by students in public
schools, the Great Meteor Crater is the
most famous of all terrestrial impact
craters.
Located in the plateau area of Northern
Arizona, the crater was the first to be
identified as caused by collision of a
great meteorite. To scientists, the impact
site is called the Barringer Meteorite
Crater. Named after Daniel Moreau Bar-
ringer, who did the original research,
the crater stood alone in the 1930's as
the only site on earth known to have
been caused by celestial collision. The
earth is now known to be scarred by
many impact collision sites.

Sixty stories deep, three miles in circumference
and almost a mile in diameter, the crater, and
the famous Rim Museum, are open to the public
throughout the year. Displays and lectures ex-
plain the educational and scientific aspects of
meteorite research.
