New Aveline Hotel Fire

| On May 3, 1908, at least twelve persons lost their lives in a fire which destroyed the New Aveline hotel. The fire was discovered at 3:30 a.m. in the elevator shaft. The hotel was erected half a century ago and the woodwork was dry as tinder. It burned like matchwood and within a few minutes the whole interior was a mass of flames, and the only means of escape was by the windows. The fire department rescued many by means of ladders, but some leaped from windows to the street. - The Indiana Progress Pennsylvania May 6, 1908. |
