FRAUNCE'S TAVERN, erected in 1730, at Broad
and Pearl Streets, was the homestead of the De Lancey fam-
ily, sold to Samuel Fraunce in 1762, who opened it as the
Queen Catharine, making it renowned for conviviality in
Revolutionary days. Washington made his headquarters
there, and there delivered his farewell address to the officers
of the Continental Army in 1783. The Sons of the Revo-
lution restored it years ago, and it is the Mecca now of those
who seek the interesting relics of the Revolution.
