A tow just north of West Point. These tows consist of from 40 to 80 canal boats connected by strong bawlers. They are placed 4 to 6 abreast and 10 to 12 feet apart. The procession moves in the wake of a steam tug, from 6 to 10 tows passing up the Hudson daily. The journey to Albany or Troy accomplished, they dispence in various directions on inland waters to distribute their freight of bricks, lumber, coal, etc.
