Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, born New York City, October 27,1858, graduated from Harvard 1880, elected to New York Assembly 1881, appointed Civil Service Commissioner by President Harrison, and served from May 1889 to May 1893, during which time he was the author of many reform movements, became Police Commissioner of New York City in 1896, was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1897 by President McKinley, resigned in 1898 and organized the United Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) as Lieutenant Colonel, but was promoted to Colonel for bravery, elected Governor of New York in 1898, elected Vice President in 1 succeeded McKinley as President 1900,on September 14, 1901, and was elected President in 1904.
