No. 173. THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 26th President,
of the United States, born in New York City, October
27, 1858, graduated from Harvard 1880, elected to New
York Assembly 1881, appointed Civil Service Commis-
sioner by President Harrison, and served from May, 1889/
to May 1895. during which time he was the author of
many reform movements, became Police Commissioner
of New York City in 1896, was appointed Assistant Sec-
retary of the Navy in 1897 by President McKinley, re-
signed in 1898 and organized the United States Volunteer
Cavalry (Rough Riders) as Lieutenant Colonel, but was
promoted to Colonel as a reward for bravery, elected
Governor of New York in 1898, elected Vice President ing
1900, succeeded McKinley as President on September 14,
1901, and was elected President in 1904.
