FORT ALLEN PARK. Seaward from the eastern
extremity of the city of Portland the Atlantic presents an un-
limited horizon to the view. The bold bluff which is sur-
mounted by this park rises to 160 feet above the waters of the
harbor. Three miles away appear the summer-populated
islands of Casco Bay. The opening in the picture shows the
narrow ship channel, guarded by modern fortifications and
lighted by powerful lamps on high stone towers. Fort Allen,
of the Revolutionary period, once occupied this site. 156.
