At Fort Wright, Fisher's Island, N.Y. No, these men are not trying to figure out the solution to a problem in mathematics, but are engaged in solving a very real problem of modern warfare. To be an officer of artillery requires a comprehensive knowledge of higher mathematics, and range finding for mortars is even harder than for the other types of guns with longer barrels. Because of the peculiar construction of mortars, in order to get any considerable range, it is necessary that they be fired a great angle of elevation. Note the telephones which enable the officers to give instructions to their men, who are doing the actual work of aiming and loading the mortars.
