Commander Raby, R.N. (Henry Curtis, boatswain's
mate; John Taylor, captain forecastle). On June 18th,
1855. immediately after the assault on Sebastopol, a
soldier of the 57th Regiment, shot through both legs, was
heard calling for assistance. Climbing over the breast-
work, Commander Raby and the seamen proceeded
upwards of 90 yards across the open, and in spite of a
heavy fire succeeded in carrying the wounded soldier to
a place of saiety, tor which act of conspicuous bravery all
received the much-coveted prize. Commander-afterwards
Admiral-Raby was among the first to receive the V.C.
