75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COMMONWEALTH LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE
1915-1990
More than 300 lighthouses help provide safe passage around Australia's
36,700 km of coastline. The Commonwealth Lighthouse Service began
on 1 July 1915 when the Federal Government took over the six former
colonial lighthouse services. The service was based on a stock of 19th
century manned lighthouses, hitherto owned by the six colonies. Most are
now unmanned and fitted with automated lights. The Service is managed
by the Department of Transport and Communications.
