A correspondent writing from New York City says, concerning Denman Thompson's "The Old Homestead:" "The Old Homestead," which was one of the recent attractions at the Academy of Music, is one of the residenters of the stage. Each year a fortune is gathered in by the old standby, which is now in its twenty-sixth year. It is never allowed to run down, nor is the company permitted to be weaned nor to grow slack or careless in portraying the various roles. Plays like this and others, which are close to the soil, have a distinct value to the theatre. They draw a certain clientele that will not come out to any other play, no matter how good it may happen to be. Yesterday afternoon I saw "The Old Homestead." A gentleman in the audience pointed out to me a sweet-faced and grayhaired woman who was enjoying her first play. She was at least sixty-five - perhaps a little older. It was a pleasure to watch that woman as she followed the unfolding of the homely but touching story. One could almost read in her face the things that pleased most. What an experience that must have been. Think of living so many years and without eer having been inside of a theatre. The veteran playgoer would have difficulty in picturing even remotely the sensations that the presentation of a strong and wholesome play like "The Old Homestead" would make upon them
