Cavalry has frequently been termed "the eyes of the army," and in this role was considered quite as important as when actively engaged in fighting. Now, however, the Aviation Corps does practically all the scouting, and is much better adapted for it in every way. One man in an aeroplane can get the desired information more quickly, more safely, and probably more accurately than a whole troop of cavalry. Since modern trench warfare precludes all opportunity for the effective use of cavalry, and suitable horses are expensive and hard to get, many authorities on military affairs declare that this arm of the service is rapidly passing, and the army of the future will be a horseless one
