MICKEY MANTLE Outfielder New York Yankees Ht: 6-0 Wt: 201 Born 10-20-31 Bats-B Throws-R Mickey was the most powerful switch-hitter in baseball history. Twice in his career he his more than 50 homers in a season and he hit some of the longest homers in baseball history. But more than this, probably no superstar ever achieved greatness with anything like as many physical handicaps. Plagued by osteomyelitis from a youthful football injury, Mickey had to wear so much tape, so many bandages, he resembled Egyptian mummy before putting on the uniform. Knee injuries, shoulder problems, abcessed hip--these are just some of the ailments Mantle had to face in addition to chronic bone disease. Despite all these problems, Mantle performed Herculean feats in his 18 years with the Yankees. He won three American League most valuable players awards, hit 300 or better 10 times, won four home run crowns, led league in runs scored five times and tied for first in another season and won the triple crown of batting in 1956. Mickey also was an outstanding World Series performer, batting .298 with a record 18 homers and a record 40 RBI in 65 games. He was named to the AL All-Star squad 16 times, including 14 years in a row (1952-65). He is a member of the Hall of Fame.
