Built in Philadelphia, in 1786, and made several experimental excursions on the Delaware. She had one cylinder, 12 inches in diameter, with a 3-foot stroke. Each revolution of the axis moved 12 oars or paddles, 5 1/2 feet. As six of the paddles were raised in the water, six more entered. The "John Fitch" is known as the first boat successfully propelled by steam in America. Fitch was a man of great mechanical resources and inventive powers. Lack of recognition drove him to ill health and his death from an overdose of medicine, July, 1798 at Bardstown, Ky
