K-2 is the rechristened name of the Godwin Austen Peak. It is the highest peak in Pakistan and second highest in the world. The first attempt to climb it was made in 1902 by Anglo-Austro-Swiss expedition. The next was by Duke of Abruzzi in 1909. Next three unsuccessful attempts in 1938, 1939, and 1953 were by the American Alpin Club. The victorious assault was undertaken in 1954 by the Italian Karakoram Expedition (Leader Dr. Desio) and July 31's midday sun saw the hoisting of the Pakistan and the Italian flags on the summit - 28,250 feet above sea level
