The Newlyn School had a very pronounced effect on British art dating the latter half of the nineteenth century. One of the most prominent members is Walter Langley who was born in Birmingham in 1852. In early days he was apprenticed as a lithographer, and studied art in his spare time. After studying at S. Kensington, he took up painting as a profession, working first in water colours and later in oils. Perhaps his best known picture is the one entitled "Motherless."
