THE HIBISCUS POOL, WAIWERA, HIBISCUS COAST, N.Z.
Outside normal hours this L-shaped pool is transformed as
guests at private parties dance on the floodlit floor or eat
freshly barbecued food at the water's edge. Designed by
a leading Auckland industrial designer, Mr. W. C. Chick,
the pool is open for swimming at 102° F. all year round.
Waiwera was developed as a tourist resort, probably the
first enterprise of its kind in New Zealand, by Robert
Graham. He settled here in 1844 and 20 years later built
a magnificent two-storied wooden hotel. It was burned to
the ground in 1939. Now modern buildings and equipment
have added to Waiwera's fame.
