This stately building, typical of the old-time seat of
local government in Virginia, was erected in 1840. It
o occupies nearly the same spot as the first Courthouse built
1745-51 by Colonel James Wood, first County Clerk, on
z land dedicated to the public use by Thomas Lord Fairfax.
The original building was about forty feet square and was
constructed of logs dovetailed at the ends. It was repaired
in 1826 and a town clock put into the tower. Around the
grounds there used to be a five-foot wall and within were
whipping post and pillory, significant of two forms of
punishment then in use.
