Old State House Rhode Island's "Independence Hall" West Front 155 N. Main St., East Front 150 Benefit St., Providence, R.I. In this building, "whose history is so interwoven with that of the nation" took place the momentous Act that gave R.I. claim to leadership in renouncing British rule (May 4, 1776). It was built by the Colony in 1760-1762 for a Court House. It was used by the State for a State House until 1900 and is a reminder of the long period of history when R. I. had two Capitals. This historic building is now used by the Sixth District Court
