BIRD'S-EYE VIEW. Montgomery is handsomely built
on a high, red clay bluff bordering the Alabama River bank.
There are many spacious, old-fashioned residences with extensive
gardens, and 50 acres of public parks; two trolley systems cover
the city, the streets of which are well-payed. Montgomery has
fifty-one church societies, one private, and three national
banks, three daily papers and several institutional libraries.
The Capitol dates from 1850.
