THE SOLDIERS' AND SAILORS' MONU-
MENT. Monument Square, in the center of the city, is
the site of Portland's tribute "To her sons who died for the
Union." It is massive in size and of excellent execution. A
bronze tablet tells that: "More than 4,000 men were enrolled
from Portland in the army and navy for the War of the
Rebellion. More than 300 were killed in battle and died in
the service." 136.
