John Brown Forerunner of Abraham Lincoln. This house where John Brown kept his men in the fall of 1859 is near Samples Manor Church, on the road to Rohersville - five miles from Harpers Ferry in Maryland. These men were sincere, religious men. Worship was held regularly at the farm. Brown made his attack on the morning of October 16, 1859, with eighteen men. Their ammunition found in the house later was - 1,000 pikes or spears, 200 revolvers and 200 sharp rifles with ammunition. It is said by neighbors there is a hidden cave on the place containing treasures. The farm now belongs to Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Ankeney who welcome all visitors.
