BOOTHBAY HARBOR: Since the days when
Captain John Smith landed on Monhegan Island in
1616, and the explorer Champlain mistook the Sheepscot
River for the St. Lawrence, and the famous naval battle
between the Boxer and the Enterprize took place off
the Damariscotta River, the Boothbay Harbor Region's
history has been steeped in the lore of the sea. The
red building in the foreground was used as a setting
in the motion picture "Carousel”.
