British Museum Reading Room The Museum had its origin in 1753, with the purchase of the library and collections of Sir Hans Sloane, numerous additions have since been made, including the courtyard, the site now extends to seven acres. In front the Museum has an Ionic Colonnade of 44 columns. The Reading Room, one of the latest additions constructed 1854-7, at a cost of £150,000, occupies the central quadrangle; it is an imposing circular hall, covered by a large dome of glass and iron, 140 feet in diameter, and 106 feet high. There is accommodation for 458 readers. The books in the libraries occupy about 40 miles of shelving
