This once wealthy and famous city began to decline early in the sixteenth century, and is now so faint a shadow of its former self that it has been called "Bruges the dead!" But it has retained its medieval appearance and is therefore dear to artists. Its Belfry, built in 1280, is the theme of Longfellow's poem: - "In the market place of Bruges, Stands the Belfry old and brown. Thrice consumed and thrice rebuilded, Still it watches o'er the town."
