May 5-11, 1996. The 100th Anniversary of the Death of George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. February 14, 1859-November 22, 1896. George Ferris' greatest engineering accomplishment was the Ferris Wheel at Chicago's World Columbian Exposition in 1893. Two hundred and sixty four feet tall, each of the giant wheel's 36 cars carried 60 passengers. Before the Exposition closed, nearly a million and a half people paid 50 cents for a twenty minute ride. And since then, amusement wheels worldwide that carry people up, over the top, and down, have been called Ferris wheels
