When pioneers began to develop Coronado-land they depended upon the Santa Fe Trail for supplies. In 1864 the government established Fort Dodge to police the trail. Expanding development made it necessary to subdue the Indians. The Fort was an important post during Gen. Sheridan's Indian campaign. In 1882 it was abandoned, the reservation opened for settlement. In 1889 Kansas acquired the Fort and built around these landmarks. The headquarters of the Pioneer Santa Fe Trail Patrol, a modern Soldiers home. The residents today are Spanish and World War veterans. Cannon an 18 pounder model 1863
