DIGGING FOR EMERALD CREEK STAR GARNET, in
North Idaho at Fernwood near St. Maries. Rock
hounds from the entire continent visit this gem-
collectors' paradise. This is the primary star garnet
area of the U. S. The purplish crystal is highly re-
garded as a semi-precious gem stone. Garnet sand
is mined here commercially for abrasive purposes.
A five-year-old exhibits finished stones and a large
rare garnet dug from the stream bed.
