Additional Details:
The site of the Essex House, 176 1/2 Essex Street, was the home of Peter Palfray, one of the old planters, before 1651. William Goodhue conducted a tavern for many years and at the close of the Revolution leased the house to Samuel Robinson and Capt. Benjamin Webb successively for the same purpose. In 1896 it was remodeled and built out to the street, the first story being used for business purposes. It still continues as for many years to be the leading hotel in the city
