Spared the worst of the bombing of 1940-43,
The Barbican still has narrow, winding street,
paved with cobbles. The area was a sixteenth
century extension of the old town centre,
growing up as a result of the increased trade
created by the wars with Spain and the
exploration of the New World. In the Quay area
may be found plaques and memorials to
commemorate many famous voyages, including
the departure of the Pilgrim Fathers and the
return of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
